The Healthy Erection

According to men’s sexual health, a man’s penis undergoes a specific step-by-step process prior to and during male erection. If a man is experiencing erectile problems, however, his penile erection will falter. A strong erection displays certain characteristics of virility, which confirm sexual health.

A healthy hard erection goes through a flaccid state as well as an erect state. Here are the features of each phase:

1) The Mechanism of an erection: FLACCID STATE

In the flaccid state the penis is soft and limp and lacks force, vigor and energy. This should be the typical condition of the penis at rest. This should not, however, describe the male sexual organ during sexual excitement and sexual activity. If this is the condition of your male erection, then you are experiencing an erection problem.

Internal male sexual health processes of a flaccid penis require smooth muscle cells. These cells keep a tight grip on the incoming arteries and blood-filled spaces to prevent blood from filling the penis when it is flaccid. At a limp state, the parts of a penile erection, dorsal vein, cavernosal artery, erectile chamber, smooth muscle cells, membranes and arteries, are compressed because the penis is not aroused.

2) The Mechanism of an erection: ERECT STATE

In the erect state the penis forms a firm hard erection. This is the condition of a man’s sexual organ during sexual activity and sexual excitement. Male erection triggers a release of chemicals that relax the smooth muscle cells. At this point, arteries widen and allow the spaces between to fill with blood. The expanding tissue blocks the venous return, trapping the increasing volume of blood. In turn, increased pressure causes a penile erection. All of the internal parts of the male erection swell including, dorsal vein, cavernosal artery, erectile chamber, smooth muscle cells, membranes, as well as the blood filled spaces and the pinched veins.

It is important to focus on the characteristics of your male erection during both the flaccid and erect state. If you feel that you are experiencing an erection problem, please contact a Boston Medical Group near you.
