What Causes My Sexual Problems?
What Causes Sexual Problems?
Sexual problems are defined as difficulty during any stage of the sexual act, preventing the individual, and very commonly, the couple from enjoying sexual activity. Although sexual problems are the most common in the geriatric population due to a decline in health associated with aging, more recent studies have shown that younger men are also experiencing a variety of sexual problems.
Some physical factors resulting in sexual problems include:
- Damage to the back and nerves
- Enlarged prostate gland
- Disease, such as multiple sclerosis and diabetic neuropathy
- Drugs and Alcohol
- Endocrine disorders
- Hormonal deficiencies (low testosterone, estrogen, or androgens)
While sexual problems are most common in aging individuals, sexual problems have become a common result of psychological causes.
Some psychological causes are:
- Work-related stress
- Anxiety about sexual performance
- Relationship problems
- Depression
- Guilt
- Effects of a past sexual trauma
It is far too common that people do not feel comfortable discussing their sexual problem; however, this makes it very difficult to treat. If you are experiencing a persistent or particularly troubling problem, be sure to see your health care provider.
