Erectile Dysfunction Myths & Facts
| Myth | Erectile Dysfunction should be accepted as a natural part of the aging process. |
| Fact | While ED is more common in older men, it is not a normal part of the aging process and should be viewed as a medical problem that requires a medical solution. Just as you would not leave high blood pressure untreated as you age, ED and its effects on the body should not be ignored. Boston Medical Group physicians have treated a wide range of patients over the past 10 years, with our oldest patient to date being 98 years old. |
| Myth | Men should not worry about Erectile Dysfunction if they are under 40 years old. |
| Fact | While ED is more common in older men, it can affect men of all ages. This is becoming increasingly true as younger men are developing medical conditions that can contribute to ED such as diabetes, high-blood pressure, and heart conditions. |
| Myth | Oral Medications are the most effective way to treat Erectile Dysfunction. |
| Fact | While oral medications are arguably the best known treatment for ED, they are not necessarily the most effective. In fact, recent studies show that oral medications are ineffective for nearly half of all men that try them. Many other safe and effective treatment options exist, even for patients that have tried oral medications unsuccessfully. |
| Myth | There are limited treatment options for men with medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood-pressure, or heart conditions. |
| Fact | While men with certain medical conditions should avoid oral medications and pills, Boston Medical Group physicians have treatments that can help. Our treatments are non-systemic, so they will not aggravate existing medical conditions or interfere with any medications for them. Men with these types of conditions frequently visit our doctors and are successful with the treatments. |
| Myth | Oral medications and pills are the safest treatment for ED. |
| Fact | Oral medications and pills must be used under strict medical supervision. In addition to minor and reversible side-effects, oral medications have been linked to death, stroke, cardiac events, permanent blindness and even hearing and memory loss. Like any other drug, a thorough medical assessment should be conducted by a physician before using pills for ED. |
| Myth | Many herbal products exist on the market today that can treat Erectile Dysfunction. |
| Fact | There are no known herbal products that are proven effective in treating ED, and at worse, these products can be very dangerous. A recent FDA alert discouraged the use of these products and stated the following: "These products have not been approved by the FDA, and there is no guarantee of their safety and effectiveness, or of the purity of their ingredients.” |
| Myth | I will have to visit a physician numerous times before I can begin treatment. |
| Fact | Most often, Boston Medical Group physicians require only one visit before you can begin the treatment program. Our comprehensive approach can determine the most effective treatment options for you during this single, two hour consultation. |
| Myth | I will have to take medication for the rest of my life in order to get an erection. |
| Fact | While no guaranteed cure exists for ED, many of our patients report that after using our treatments, over time, they no longer need them to achieve and maintain an erection. All treatment programs recommended by Boston Medical Group physicians will provide an immediate erectile response while also focusing on improving the conditions long-term. |
| Myth | If my own physician or urologist cannot help me, no one else can. |
| Fact | It is very common for other physicians to refer their patients to us for treating ED. Only Boston Medical Group physicians are licensed to use The Boston Method®, a proprietary treatment process, and they consistently get results when other options have been unsuccessful. This is especially true in severe or hard to treat cases. |
| Myth | Erectile Dysfunction only affects the man. |
| Fact | ED often causes feelings of inadequacy, frustration, and low self-esteem, and can ultimately lead to depression or aggressiveness. As a result, personal, family and business relationships may also be adversely affected if it is left untreated. |
