Diabetes and Erectile Dysfunction: Choosing the Right ED Treatment for Diabetics

October 29, 2024

What is Diabetes? How DM and Erectile Dysfunction Related?

Studies found a strong link between diabetes and erectile dysfunction. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) affects over 23.6 million Americans in United States. Oftentimes, DM occurs first in men and as disease progresses may result to erectile dysfunction (ED). Erectile dysfunction is a disorder commonly associated with erection problems. Most men suffer from an inability to achieve and maintain a sufficient erection for sexual intercourse.

Erectile dysfunction can affect 1 in 3 men worldwide at some point. Also, it is often typical among older men. However, nowadays an increasing number of younger men are acquiring ED as diabetes increases worldwide.

What are the Possible Effects of Diabetes in Men?

Diabetic impotence also known as diabetic erectile dysfunction is common among men with diabetes. Impotence has many causes that varies among men with diabetes. A lot of medications for blood pressure, ulcers, depression and heartburn have sexual side effects.  Diabetes impairs the nerves, muscles and blood vessels responsible for proper blood flow to the penis.  As a result, men suffer from erectile dysfunction or difficulty in sustaining satisfactory erection. The penis requires a proper blood flow to achieve a full erection and high levels of blood sugar causes blood vessel and nerve damage in the penis. ED and diabetes are results of high blood glucose levels in the body.

Heart disease is a health condition that occur alongside with diabetes. It could also constrict or harden blood vessels and further affect blood flow to the penis. Maintaining normal blood sugar levels is also the key to healthy blood flow. Thus, stable blood glucose level helps lower risk of erectile dysfunction. Diabetes and ED treatment should come hand in hand. Experts are into finding the best ED treatment for diabetics.

Finding the Right Diabetes and ED Treatment

Diabetic patients often take antihypertensive pills that can result in a loss of libido in both men and women. Hence, it is important to seek medical advice from your doctor about your medications and how this regimen affect your sexual health.

Erectile dysfunction in most cases, may lead to psychological problems. This includes poor motivation, feelings of failure, denial, low self esteem and even depression. ED can also affect personal relationships including family life and business relations when left untreated. In fact, diabetes and erectile dysfunction are just some of the few health concerns that link to multiple problems. Therefore, it is essential to have regular medical visits to lower chances of acquiring diabetes and erectile dysfunction.
